Conservative Government’s Budget Fails to Deliver Real Affordability Relief for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians

Now that Budget 2026 has passed in the House of Assembly, the Official Opposition maintains serious concerns about the lack of meaningful affordability measures in the Conservatives provincial budget, and that the government has failed to deliver on its repeated promises to “pull every lever” to help people cope with the rising cost of living.

The Conservatives titled their budget “Opportunity for All of Us”, but it ended up being a missed opportunity, for all of us.

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians were expecting real relief, what they got instead was a continuation of existing measures and a government claiming credit for work it didn’t do. That falls well short of what was promised.

The Conservative government failed to incorporate any changes stemming from public and stakeholder criticism to the budget, such as falling short in commitments to early childhood educators, nothing to address the cost of gas or electricity, and cuts to municipalities.

The Official Opposition will continue to push for concrete actions that directly reduce costs and improve affordability for families across the province.
