John Hogan, KC, Leader of the Official Opposition, is questioning Premier Tony Wakeham’s inconsistent commitments regarding his plan for an independent review of the Churchill Falls MOU. These questions, which should be answered in the House of Assembly for the benefit of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, are matters of public interest and deserve clear, honest answers.
This week, Mr. Wakeham spoke about having the independent review conducted by a three-person panel with backgrounds in finance, economics, and energy. He acknowledged that this is similar to what is already in place. Does this mean he intends to terminate the current oversight panel?
Mr. Wakeham also said he is reviewing résumés for potential panelists. There was no public expression of interest issued for individuals to apply. Does this mean Mr. Wakeham has reached out to individuals privately and asked them to serve as panelists? This is not an open or transparent process.
The question of who is selecting the members of this panel continues to go unanswered. If Mr. Wakeham is reviewing these résumés, does that mean he and his Cabinet will make the selection? If so, that certainly does not make the panel independent.
Three weeks ago, Mr. Wakeham said the independent review could be completed in 60 days. This week, he has extended the timeline to 90 days. Why has the timeline been extended?
It is clear that Mr. Wakeham does not have a plan for the biggest economic opportunity in Newfoundland and Labrador’s history.
