MHA for Mount Pearl–North Calls on Conservative Government to Reverse Multi-Year Capital Works Budget Cuts

The MHA for Mount Pearl-North is calling on the Conservative Government to reverse cuts to the Province’s Multi-Year Capital Works (MYCW) program recently announced in Budget 2026.

Opposition MHA Lucy Stoyles arranged a meeting between the City of Mount Pearl and the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Barry Petten to address serious concerns raised by municipalities. Under the changes announced in Budget 2026, the City of Mount Pearl is expected to lose more than $3.3 million in infrastructure funding over the next four years. This reduction will have a direct impact on the city’s ability to invest in roads, water and sewer upgrades, and other critical municipal infrastructure projects.

While municipalities across Newfoundland and Labrador are facing reductions in funding, Stoyles says the impact on Mount Pearl is significant and unacceptable.

“Mount Pearl residents pay taxes and deserve to see their infrastructure properly supported by government,” says Stoyles. “A cut of more than $3.3 million over four years is a major blow to our city and will only place greater pressure on municipal budgets and local taxpayers.”

Stoyles says municipalities are already struggling with aging infrastructure, inflation, and rising construction costs, and now is not the time for the Conservative government to scale back support. “The Conservatives cannot continue downloading costs onto municipalities while expecting communities to do more with less. This funding needs to be restored”, says Stoyles.

Stoyles thanks the City of Mount Pearl for meeting to discuss the issue and says she will continue advocating alongside municipalities for fair and sustainable infrastructure funding. “Our communities deserve a government that listens and works with municipalities, not one that blindsides them with cuts and a lack of consultation. The Conservatives campaigned on transparency, and it’s time they live up to their promise,” says Stoyles. “I will continue fighting to ensure Mount Pearl receives the support it needs and deserves.”
