FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 23, 2025
Botwood, NL – Today, Premier John Hogan, KC, leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador, joined by Liberal Candidate for Exploits, Fabian Power, announced new measures to deliver health care in rural Newfoundland and Labrador through the creation of new Mobile Primary Care Teams, and a commitment to further expand family care teams across the province.
With an aging population spread across the vast expanse of our province, Newfoundland and Labrador faces unique and complex challenges to deliver health care services. Having access to a primary care provider promotes the overall health and well-being of individuals and their families, helps ensure a continuum of care and improves health outcomes.
The Liberal Government has made enormous, generational investments in our health care system over the last number of years, including a 10 year Health Accord.
We have already created 21 family care teams, which collectively have connected more than 110,000 additional patients to primary care through these teams.
A re-elected Liberal Government will continue to increase investment in our family care teams to increase the number of patients connected to primary care to 155,000 by the end of next year. We are committed to opening 14 more family care teams across the province to meet the goal of 35 family care teams envisioned by the Health Accord.
These are transformative investments in our health care system, and we know that there is still more to do to improve access to timely, in-person health care services – particularly in rural and remote areas.
That’s why a re-elected Liberal government will introduce 10 new Mobile Primary Care Teams, with the first one starting in central Newfoundland. These Mobile Primary Care Teams will travel to rural communities in the region with the specific goal of providing in-person care to those without a primary care provider. The services and care this team will provide will be the same as you would normally expect to receive from a family physician.
The first team will be made up of a doctor and a registered nurse who will travel on a regular schedule in Cottrell’s Cove/Fortune Harbour, Point Leamington and Leading Tickles for in-person appointments.
This model will be replicated throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, increasing direct, in-person access to primary care for rural and remote residents.
Our government will also review the funding model for family physicians.
Your Liberal Government created the 10 year Health Accord, which is guiding transformation across the Province. The initiatives announced today are consistent with the Health Accord, and will complement our work to date. This also includes the new nurse practitioner funding pilot launched last month that will further increase access to primary care by compensating independent nurse practitioners for providing medically necessary services without the patient having to pay out-of-pocket.
Together, these measures will ensure that more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can access the care they need, when and where they need it.
With real momentum, energy and leadership, the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador is embracing our province’s tremendous opportunities to deliver a stronger future for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
