Official Opposition Presses Conservative Government on Broken Promises and Delays in First Question Period

On the first day of Question Period of the spring sitting, the Official Opposition challenged the Conservative government on what is becoming a familiar pattern of excuses, cancellations and reversals.

In the House of Assembly today, the Official Opposition raised concerns about reports indicating the government has reversed its commitment on topsides for the Bay du Nord project. While the Liberal Party supports reaching this latest milestone for the project, and in fact successfully fought for Bay du Nord’s approval by the federal government, concerns remain that it will not achieve maximum benefit for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Despite numerous opportunities, the Conservative Government refused to confirm its commitment that any Bay du Nord benefits agreement would include all topsides and subsea work. This leaves Newfoundlanders and Labradorians wondering whether the Premier will attempt to sell something less lucrative as a replacement for the topsides work they promised.

The Conservative Government also failed to commit to a special debate in the House of Assembly before signing the final benefits agreement for Bay du Nord, despite Premier Wakeham’s previous statements that one was required. They also failed to address the double standard they are setting by refusing to commit to the same mechanisms they demanded for another multi-billion-dollar project, the Churchill Falls MOU.

The Official Opposition further pressed the Conservative Government on the cancellation of a new, modern provincial hospital, leaving patients and health care workers facing continued uncertainty.

While the Conservatives offered deflection and excuses, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are looking for leadership. They want promises fulfilled, projects delivered, and real solutions to the challenges they face every day.

The Official Opposition will continue to hold this government accountable, offer solutions, and stand up for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
