The Official Opposition says the PC Government’s decision to temporarily eliminate the provincial gas tax is an acknowledgment of what Liberals have been calling for months: more immediate relief at the pumps and a recognition that the government’s so-called “permanent” tax cut was never permanent.
The PC Government previously touted its tax cut as permanent back in March and criticized previous reductions as temporary, but is now changing its approach by reducing the provincial tax on gasoline and diesel to zero temporarily from only December 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027. Despite announcing this temporary measure, Finance Minister Craig Pardy continued to use the word “permanent” in his announcement.
Rather than providing relief all summer and fall when gas prices were high and increased government revenues allowed, the PCs waited until the opening day of the House of Assembly to offer Newfoundlanders and Labradorians any relief, and its still another month away.
“The Official Opposition has been calling for months for the PC Government to do more to help people struggling with the cost of living. Now, the government is finally moving on gas tax relief, but only for four months, and Newfoundlanders and Labradorians still have to wait another month to see that relief,” says Leader of the Official Opposition John Hogan, KC.
“The PCs have spent months bragging about their so-called permanent tax cut. We have been saying all along that it was never truly permanent, and now we’re seeing the government change course. The Finance Minister cannot announce temporary relief that expires at the end of March and continue to sell it as permanent”, says Finance Critic Sarah Stoodley.
The four-month tax holiday will provide some relief to drivers and businesses, but Newfoundlanders and Labradorians need meaningful, predictable support to manage the rising cost of everyday essentials.
“People need help now, not more announcements that leave them wondering what happens next. The government has an opportunity to provide broader, more immediate affordability relief, and it should be clear with people about how long that relief will actually last,” says Hogan.
The Official Opposition will continue to press the PC Government to deliver practical and meaningful affordability measures that put money back in people’s pockets and provide certainty for families and businesses across Newfoundland and Labrador.
