John Hogan, Leader of the Official Opposition, is thanking Quebec Premier François Legault for his service following his announcement to resign.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador, I want to thank Premier François Legault for his friendship and years of dedicated service to the people of Quebec and to Canada. It was a pleasure working together, and I wish him all the best in his next chapter,” says Hogan.
The Official Opposition is urging the provincial government to continue moving forward with the Churchill Falls MOU with Hydro-Quebec. Conservative Premier Tony Wakeham has repeatedly stated that he “will not be rushed by any artificial deadline.” However, today’s news of Premier Legault’s resignation demonstrates that things can change quickly, that timelines do matter, and that we cannot miss this opportunity.
In his resignation speech, Premier Legault emphasized his hope of achieving a fair and balanced outcome, a win-win, for both Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec in the coming months.
The Official Opposition strongly agrees and urges both governments to set aside political differences and work collaboratively to finalize the Churchill Falls agreement.
