Official Opposition Welcomes Extension of Food Fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Official Opposition welcomes the federal government’s decision to extend the recreational food fishery to seven days a week in parts of Newfoundland and Labrador. This is a long-overdue change that reflects what Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have been calling for over many years.

For far too long, residents of this province have faced restrictions that did not align with the realities of our culture, traditions, and way of life, especially when compared to the full-week access permitted in other Atlantic provinces. As Premier, John Hogan, KC, highlighted the importance of this extension, and the Liberal Party has long advocated for a more accessible food fishery. We are pleased to see those concerns finally acted upon by the federal government.

The Official Opposition also applauds the removal of the 15-fish per boat limit and the decision to focus enforcement on illegal sales rather than ordinary families enjoying the food fishery responsibly.

While we recognize and understand stock concerns in some regions and the need for sustainability, this change is an important step toward restoring fairness and respecting the deep connection Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have to the food fishery.

The Official Opposition urges the federal government to continue working closely with harvesters in Newfoundland and Labrador to ensure their voices are heard and reflected in decision-making. Ongoing collaboration and meaningful consultation are essential to supporting rural Newfoundland and Labrador, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the fishery.
