St. John’s, NL – Elvis Loveless, MHA for Fortune Bay – Cape La Hune and Opposition Critic for Fisheries and Aquaculture wrote to the Federal Minister of Fisheries, the Honourable Joanne Thompson, today to reiterate the importance of properly supporting and investing in our province’s fishery.
“Newfoundland and Labrador’s world-class fishery is a vital economic contributor and is the heart of many of our province’s rural communities. Employing more than 16,000 workers and exporting premium quality products to 38 countries around the world, it is critical that appropriate investments are made to maintain the strength and sustainability of this important industry.”
As we learn that the 3PS cod stock is smaller than anticipated and the rebuilding plan is not going as expected, MHA Loveless is urging the Federal Minister to ensure that the proper science and technology is used, and that FFAW is consulted, in the stock reassessment and rebuilding plan going forward.
“A comprehensive picture of the situation off the shores of Newfoundland and Labrador requires meaningful engagement and consultation with local harvesters. Their first-hand experience and day-to-day observations are an invaluable component of assessments going forward.”
MHA Loveless also requested confirmation of the continuation of the Atlantic Fisheries Fund which has supported and benefited harvesters and processors in Newfoundland and Labrador, and suggested consideration of a cull of seals.
MHA Loveless requested a meeting with Minister Thompson to discuss this and other ways to ensure a strong and sustainable fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador.
