St. John’s, NL – Opposition Critic for Seniors, MHA Lucy Stoyles, is calling on the Conservative Government to make public their plans to support seniors in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Our Liberal Government introduced a number of impactful and successful programs that improved the lives of Newfoundland and Labrador seniors, and we are waiting to learn if this government will continue those programs and build upon them.”
Our government put a focus on supporting seniors and healthy aging with the Senior’s Well-Being Plan which included programs and services such Aging Well at Home Grant, Caregiver Benefit, increased funding for the Provincial Home Repair Program and Home Modification Program, enhanced immune response influenza vaccines, and a $500 annual supplement for food and heating for seniors in coastal Labrador communities. We also introduced a targeted basic program, created centres of Excellence in Aging, provided funding and support for dementia care, expanded access to shingles vaccine and increased the Seniors Benefit by 15% and indexed it to the consumer price index.
Our election platform committed to maintaining and expanding these valuable programs, including doubling both the Aging Well at Home Grant from $400 to $800 per year, and the Caregiver Benefit from $400 to $800 per month, and we urge the Minister of Seniors to take immediate action to implement their commitments to supporting seniors.
The Office of the Official Opposition thanks the Seniors’ Advocate for her comprehensive work and continued effort to keep a focus on our province’s seniors.
