FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
St. John’s, NL – Opposition Critic for Transportation and Infrastructure, MHA Jamie Korab, attended the Transportation and Infrastructure announcement today, to discover that the Conservative’s commitment of 24-hour snow clearing “for all of us” is turning out to be a broken promise. This announcement is not “for all of us” as promised, particularly rural and remote parts of our province.
The 14 routes Minister Petten listed that will receive 24-hr snow clearing are the same 14 routes that the Liberal Government snowcleared on a 24-hr schedule when precipitation was forecasted.
“Safety is always top of mind when it comes to our travelling public, including those who do the important work of maintaining our roads, highways and bridges. The Conservative government has announced that they will now have additional shifts covering the same routes even when there’s no road maintenance to do. This change is going to cost tax-payers $3 million versus the $1.9 million they committed to in their platform.”
Jamie Korab, MHA for Waterford Valley, is challenging the accuracy of the Conservative government’s cost to “reinstate” this service and, most importantly, how they plan to recruit a sufficient workforce.
“As winter approaches, I encourage all residents across the province to practice safe driving and to be prepared by checking road and highway conditions before getting behind the wheel.”
