St. John’s, NL – Opposition critic for Energy and Mines, Fred Hutton wrote to the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) today to express concern with the recent job losses in Labrador West as a result of restructuring aimed at improving service delivery and production.
IOC is a leading employer and key economic driver in the region and the province. A reduced workforce has serious impacts on the company’s dedicated employees and the communities in which they live.
“While we recognize the value of responsible business practices and the importance of ensuring a successful future for IOC and the thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians employed there, we urge you to pursue a reduced workforce as a measure of last resort.”
MHA Fred Hutton, along with Opposition Critic for Labour, Bernard Davis, and Opposition Critic for Labrador Affairs, Lisa Dempster, requested a meeting with the leadership team at IOC to discuss their plans for 2026 and future opportunities in Labrador West.
