Prime Minister Carney’s Electrification Goals Present Timely Opportunity; Opposition Urges Government to Continue Negotiations with Hydro-Québec

Today, Prime Minister Carney announced his plan to double Canada’s electricity grid by 2050, and highlighted the opportunity presented by Churchill Falls hydro development.

While serving as Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, John Hogan, KC discussed on several occasions with Prime Minister Carney the monumental opportunity that our province’s MOU with Quebec on the development of Churchill Falls presented for both Newfoundland and Labrador and the country. The Prime Minister understood the value of this significant natural resource and the partnership with Québec, and subsequently included it on the list of nation-building projects.

“I am pleased to see that the Prime Minister understands the importance and opportunity of electrification, including development of hydroelectricity in Labrador.” says Opposition Lead John Hogan. “I know that he believes in the potential of Churchill Falls and the agreement that was on the table with Québec.”

The Official Opposition encourages Premier Wakeham to continue negotiations with Hydro–Québec. Reaching an agreement and advancing the project would open the door for meaningful federal contributions to a shovel ready project.

“While the Premier waits for his biased reviews to be completed, Newfoundland and Labrador has already lost $1.4 billion,” says Energy and Mines critic Fred Hutton. “Now is the time to act and ensure Newfoundland and Labrador becomes a major player in the Prime Minister’s plan to double Canada’s electricity grid.”
