FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Leadership Election Committee (NLEC) is announcing its intention to restart the Leadership Election process on June 8, 2020. The NLEC will immediately take steps to reinitiate the process and plans to provide formal notice of the resumption of the Leadership Election on June 1, 2020, assuming there are no impediments to doing so.
The 2020 Liberal Leadership Election will be executed in accordance with all of the Chief Medical Officer of Health’s public health orders under the Public Health Protection and Promotion Act, SNL 2018 c p-37.3. Voting will take place virtually and all campaign activities must adhere to social distancing protocols.
The Supplementary Rules Governing the 2020 Liberal Party of NL Leadership Convention remain in effect until the resumption of the Leadership Election.
“As we have stated in the past, public health advice is critical to our decision-making process. We have seen our province move forward due to the collective efforts of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and we feel that we can now proceed with the Leadership Election to allow for political engagement in a safe and cautious manner. We thank Premier Ball, Minister Haggie, Dr. Fitzgerald, and the many public servants for their continued efforts during this pandemic.
Sarah Pinsent, Co-Chair, Leadership Election & AGM
“The NLEC is fully committed to resuming the Leadership Election in a responsible manner. As our collective focus has gone from containing the COVID-19 public health crisis to how we are to live within our new normal, Newfoundland and Labrador is looking toward the future and the bigger picture. As such, and in view of our much improved circumstances, now is the appropriate time to move the Leadership Election forward cautiously but dutifully toward our next chapter.”
