FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Low population density in Newfoundland and Labrador has long made health care delivery challenging. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the potential reach of eHealth/telemedicine, which numerous medical professionals quickly engaged across the province in recent months.
“Our Liberal government recognizes the need for innovative health care now, more than ever,” said Premier Andrew Furey. “We will expand access to health care in rural and remote regions of the province through viable investments in eHealth/telemedicine infrastructure – including vital mental health and pharmacy services.”
“Expanding eHealth/telemedicine services means decreasing travel time and costs, while increasing access to services – which is paramount for rural areas of the province,” he said.
To achieve this innovative approach to health care, a Furey government will invest in technology and IT training, including on-site IT support to enable digital health care service delivery. The government will work in conjunction with the newly-created provincial Health Accord to ensure equitable access to health care services is achieved for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, including rural residents and isolated Indigenous communities.
The cost savings through this service delivery shift will be reinvested into expanded subsidies for rural and remote residents, particularly residents of Labrador, to travel for specialized health care that cannot be offered digitally.
“This digital approach to health care ensures that more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have access to necessary, vital health services,” said Premier Furey.
Online access is also offering improved mental health services. The expansion to other provinces of the award-winning Bridge the gapp site, developed by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, highlights the scope for innovation and excellence in our province. A Furey Government will support the ongoing research and continued development of this essential online resource.
